The Rice Raiser has two goals: The first is obviously to see the state of hunger changed and enough food for everyone. The other goal is to raise awareness about global hunger and instill seeds of compassion in our youth so that they will care for others in need now and in the future. The comments that came back from the participating students makes it clear that they are concerned about people who suffer from hunger and are ready to work towards change now.
Comment from a high school student
I for one know what it is like to feel hunger. I was raised by a single mother and many times my brother and I did not have enough food to eat. My mom went without the most.
If it can be this bad here in Canada, one of the richest countries in the world, imagine what it must be like in developing countries where there is no help.

We learned that:
There are a lot more people than I thought that don’t have enough food to eat.
Someone dies every 3 seconds from a hunger related cause. A child dies every 5 seconds.
I like helping people in poorer countries. I never thought people could be so poor.
I learned that we have lots of food and we are picky, but other people around the world would eat anything because they are so hungry._
I didn’t know that every three seconds someone dies. I feel very bad about that.
If I were to be hungry, I could live a long time, but others, when they’re hungry have a chance of dying.
Learning about global hunger and in Canada is important too, because then you can help because you know what you are up against.
That there is more than enough food for everybody.
We have so much even if it doesn’t feel that way.
We can help people.
We must help people with less resources than us.
Rice is helpful and healthy.
The Rice Raiser gave me lots of info about hunger making me want to give more. I never realized how bad it was.
That so many people rely on rice.
That rice is the most eaten food in the world.
That hunger can cause death and we can help people who are in hunger.
That many countries in despair have a child dying of hunger every 5 seconds.
That lots of people live on a dollar a day.
That we need to share our money and food.
I didn’t realize how many people actually die every day from hunger, a lot of which are children.
That there are so many poor countries…it is unbelievable!
That rice is a major food in poor places and that every three seconds a person dies from hunger.
I learned the main food in the world is rice and the most rice is needed in countries with poverty.
I learned that rice is the only food source that grows everywhere. People depend on rice because it easy to grow and easy to cook.
I learned that a lot of kids die before they get to my age (13) because of hunger and most of them are women and girls.
The Rice Raiser is important to participate in because:
Because people become kinder when thinking about other peoples needs.
It teaches us to give food to the less fortunate in the future, too.
Because it makes you feel good to give something you have to someone who doesn’t have it.
Lots of people don’t have enough to eat, but we have breakfast, lunch and supper every day!
I like doing this because I like helping people throughout the world.
Lots of children need help to survive and most don’t have anything.
God wants us to survive and make his world good.
It makes you feel good when you give.
It’s is interesting and sad to learn, but you get to help giving food.
I got to help others do something, not for them, but for others.
I will be a part of that generation for feeding hungry people all over the world.
The Rice Raiser Campaign is good for the world.
It’s important to learn about hunger because we don’t know what it’s like being hungry.
Because Canada is wealthy and other places are not. So we have enough to feed millions of people.
It is very important to learn about hunger so we can do something about it.
We should all choose to be part of a generation to change hunger.
The Rice Raiser is a great idea and we had fun!
Everyone should be able to have food.
It’s important that people should know that many people are dying of hunger right now.
I am sure we saved many lives doing this activity.

If we know more about this, then we can also learn how to help these people.

The rich are sometimes greedy so this is a chance to make the greediness go away.
It’s very important to learn about hunger. It seems dumb for North Americans not to care about others who are hungry when we are over fed.
We have a lot of food in Canada and we should share our resources.
It felt good on the inside because you knew that you were helping somebody.
It’s very important to learn about hunger because childrens in Canada doesn’t know the meaning of hunger. I hope the families have enough money to plant more crops and I hope there will be more campaign in the future.

Suggestions from students:
I think maybe to make it more a community participation so more food and money will be raised.
It would be better if lots of schools got together and did it.
I think everyone should help the poor.
I think more schools should do it.
I think we should have more of the community helping.
It was fun. Make all the schools do it.

I would like other people to join in to help world hunger.
You could get more people to go to hungry places and see how bad it is.
Get more and more people doing it. Make commercials on the TV
That everybody should give a little money and rice.
That they should put it in the newspapers and television and other stuff that is big and get it out!
The Rice Raiser should be talked about over the whole community. Everyone should give rice or money.
Everyone should change world hunger.
A Rice Run or other activities like that of fund raising.
I think that every school should do this.
I think we did great, but we can do better next year.
I saw that a great percentage of us brought rice and it may look like we helped many people, but there is still a lot of people who are dying of hunger and we need to get to them ASAP!
