Have A Rice Day on Human Rights Day, Dec. 10

27 November 2009

Since the Declaration of Human Rights was adopted in 1948 having access to sufficient nutritous food has been considered a basic human right. Now we find ourselves at the close of year 2009 and there are estimated to be more than one billion people who are food insecure. That is nearly one sixth of the world’s people!

Hunger Response International has identified December 10 along with six other global observance dates to a new initiative called Have A Rice Day.

Have A Rice Day is a new movement designed to raise awareness and support for world hunger. We’re challenging individuals, community leaders, people in the work place and studnets of all ages to experience a little ‘taste’ of hunger through participation in Have A Rice Days.

On Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, we invite you to purchase a Have A Rice Day button for $5 and wear it proudly. Then substitute one of your regular meals for a simple bowl of rice. You may find yourself feeling a little bit hungry long before your next meal. If you are, good. You are identifying with the one billion plus people in our world who struggle with hunger most of the time.

Visit the Have A Rice Day Website and learn about this and the other six Have A Rice Days. Order your Have A Rice Day Buttons and consider organizing a Have A Rice Day lunch with a group of people. It’s simple and effective. www.haveariceday.ca
