Chief Dan George Middle School Surpasses Goals

2 March 2010

The New Year started with an outpouring of compassion by Chief Dan George Middle School in Abbotsford!

Besides collecting rice for Haiti, the school ran their Rice Raiser Campaign during January wrapping it all up with a 23 hour fast for the grade eight students.

Chief Dan George Middle School exceeded their goals and collected over 1000 kilograms of rice for the Abbotsford food bank and $2,563.00 for global projects!!

Some of the funds will be multiplied by three and four times through CIDA matching grants!!!

Students learned about global hunger through their school wide month long campaign and the grade eights experienced a tast of hunger by fasting for about 23 hours. What a fantastic response!

The following week, on Feb. 5th, several Chief Dan George Middle School students joined their teacher, Ms. Amy Klassen, to help kick off the Rice Raiser Campaign at the Sumas Village Save-On-Foods Store! Wearing Rice Raiser Campaign Shirts they sang, cheered and danced as they invited customers to buy a bag of rice for the food bank and help the hungry locally and globally. Thanks for the great enthusiastic help!

Hunger Response International congratulates the school for an outstanding Rice Raiser Campaign and for putting learning to action!

Here are some of the great comments that were shared through evaluation forms:

“The Rice Raiser campaign really did make me aware of hunger in the world. Some of my thoughts were just wanting to be able to help and how lucky I am to come home to a full fridge and shelter.”

“I now realize how much we really have compared to other countries – we have it very good! Participating in the Rice Raiser Campaign has made me more aware of my world and it has motivated me to give more.”

“This is the third year our school has done the Rice Raiser Campaign. I felt it was different this year because now that I am older, I feel I understand more and care about the difficulties and challenges people have in our world.

“The government is doing a really good thing matching our donations! It makes people (including me) more motivated to give because we know that a little can go a long way. It is great!”

“The CIDA matching grants made doing the Rice Raiser Campaign very exciting this year because some people don’t have a lot of money to give, but knowing the government is going to multiply the money it helps us know that even if you have only a small amount, it will still make a difference.”

“Our school has done this for 3 years. This year I learned a lot about how bad it really is. If you see commercials on TV it only lasts for a few seconds and then you go back to your life. But actually participating in something like this opened my eyes to how bad it actually is.”

“We made posters and put them up everywhere! We also made a rice-o-meter and had a big bin to collect the rice which we overfilled! We also played games, had relays, watched movies about poverty and listed to speakers.”

“It could be a privilege to be part of this generation if we are the ones to change hunger. People will remember us for a long time. We are a strong generation and I know we can do it!”

Teacher:
“Youth at the middle/high school age are forming their view of the world. If we can reach them now, we can help shape the actions of the next generation.”

Teacher:
“As a school, it is one of the most important events that we do here. To raise awareness about hunger both in our community and abroad is a vital lesson for life.”

“We did a really good thing for people who don’t have much at all!”

Way to go, Chief Dan George Middle School!
