May 15 – Have a Rice Day on the International Day of the Family

7 May 2010

Food security keeps families together! This year, the project that we are working on in Guatemala is helping empower women and children who have been left in thier village as their men try to find employment on coffee or cotten plantations. They are gone for months at a time and the women often struggle to find food to feed their children.

This year the United Nations has themed International Day of the family on migration. www.un.org/esa/socdev/family/

Often families migrate for food security reasons. Sometimes out of necessity one or two family members have to travel far away to find employment leaving the remaining family members to fend for themselves. Economic hardship from natural and man-made disasters is an ongoing concern that leaves people desperate and families divided.

This is something to think about as you and your family replace one of your regular meals and sit down to a simple bowl of rice. We challenge you to use this time to discuss what life must be like for people who have only this amount of food for their entire day…sometimes even longer!
